Offerings/Sacrifices Simplified
Sinful man could not come close to YHWH who is Holy (otherwise man would die). Because YHWH wanted man to draw near to Him, he made a provision: The death of animals (through sacrifice offering) in man’s place. The word “sin” means “transgression of the law/instructions of YHWH/Torah.
The word translated in our Western bibles as “offering”, in Hebrew means “to draw near to”. This “offering” made “atonement” for those sins. In Hebrew the word “atonement” means “a proprietary shelter”. In other words, through the offering sacrifice, sinful man is protected from being Killed, because man’s sins are transferred symbolically to the innocent animal which is killed, rather than the guilty sinful man.
When Western Bibles say the burning animal was a soothing fragrance to YHWH, the Hebrew scriptures say it was a “restful” fragrance meaning He rested from action (like the action of killing the sinful man). All this was provision for YHWH’s people to come near to Him. Though the animal sacrifices were effective for a time, they were a temporary fix. YHWH created a permanent fix by providing His one and only Son Yeshua (the perfect Lamb of YHWH) to suffer and die on the cross (stake) transferring man’s sins to Him who paid the price to atone for man’s sins. This was the more perfect permanent sacrifice which was provision for sinful man to come near to YHWH. That is all He ever wanted in the first place: A restored relationship with man like He had in the Garden of Eden before man fell.
